Assessment has been developing as an important activity for information organizations for over a century, but the past two decades have seen an exponential increase in efforts to quantify the value of services and demonstrate this value to stakeholders.

This involves measuring an organization's resources (inputs), programs, and/or services (outputs) against defined goals (outcomes), and should focus on outcomes. Outcomes include improved satisfaction with and use of services; or, in academic libraries, improved student learning, faculty teaching effectiveness, and scholarly productivity.
